  • Working from home and video calls are the new normal for the foreseeable future
  • Lighting, angles, and video background preparation are key to video calling
  • Take advantage of the perks of staying at home

The Coronavirus pandemic has changed the world. All facets of our life have been affected. Employment has been significantly affected. Millions have lost their jobs. Those that are still employed now work with personal protective equipment or work from home. A significant aspect of working from home is the use of online meetings. Here are a few tips to look your best and feel confident!

Lighting

Lighting is key! It is best to use natural lighting and a light source that is located in front of you. This is best because it prevents you from casting unnatural shadows over portions of your face and allows you to face the camera with a good angle. If you don’t have natural lighting that can be used, try to utilize something like a lamp. In order to test out your lighting beforehand, use a phone!

Angles

It’s all about the angles. Camera angles matter and make a huge difference in how you end up looking on camera. When facing your camera, try to be looking up. When placing your camera try to place it somewhat near eye level if you can. This keeps your eyes open and will ensure that you look familiar.

A little prep goes a long way

When working at home, you don’t need to prepare as if you’re going to work. However, it is best to still put in a bit of effort to look as you usually would at work and/or school. Freshen up before your meeting. Look clean and groomed if you can. Dress somewhat appropriately. You don’t need to be in a suit and tie but try to avoid being in full pajamas.

No distractions!

Remember that the camera picks up more than you! This is why having a tidy background is important. Try to limit any visual distractions that may be in front of you or behind you. You need to be able to keep your focus while also not distracting others.  Think about possible sources of noise, pets, or anything else that may keep you from looking into the lens. If possible, have a dedicated area for video calls. This will make it easy for you to be ready to jump on a call at any time.

With these tips, you’ll be ready to work from home in the coming weeks while still feeling fully enabled. Don’t let being at home curb your productivity or focus. Make it work and take advantage of its perks while you can! Physis is here to help!
